Breeding Policy

At Tireve we attempt to produce Welsh Ponies of Cob Type and Welsh Cobs of the traditional Cardiganshire type through two distinct bloodlines tracing back to the tap root sires Ceitho Welsh Comet and Mathrafal Brenin, that have the conformation, courage and action of their forebearers and the ability to compete in all equestrian spheres from in hand, ridden and driven showing through to cross country, show jumping and dressage.

Show Ring Successes

In recent years, the stud has virtually withdrawn from in hand showing, preferring to let our youngstock mature naturally and unforced, rather than being overproduced and ruined for their future careers.

Past successes have included a Royal Welsh Section C Supreme Champion both in hand and under saddle, Champion at the Royal of England, Picton Mountain and Moorland Ridden Champion as well as championships at most of the affliated shows in both England and Wales.  Nebo Prince and Tireve Tywysog Du taking between them a total of 118 championships in their showring careers.  In the days of the welsh cob premiums, stallions standing at Tireve, were awarded a total of 15 premiums both in South Wales and the East of England.

Danielle's youngest son Daniel (aged 12) has this year taken up the mantle of in hand showman, previously occupied by his mother and grandfather, with his own strawberry roan section A filly. We hope that in a few years time he will be showing some of the current young cob and cob type mares that are currently maturing very nicely at home.

Judging & Other involvement with the WPCS

Both Steve and Danielle are members of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society's judging panels for in hand and under saddle.  Steve is one of 14 recently approved to judge harness classes by the Society.  They have between them judged all over the British Isles, much of Europe and as far afield as New Zealand.  Dani is judging the Section C's at the 2011 Royal Welsh Winer Fair, Steve judged the Section Cs at the Royal Welsh in 1997 and is this year judging the National Shows both in Belgium and Denmark and has been invited to judge the Section Ds at the 2012 Royal Welsh Show.

Steve has served four terms on Council since 1998, was Vice-Chairman of Council 2010-2011 and is currently on the judging and showing and white markings committeees.   During 2010 Steve was part of the project group that accomplished the purchase, refurbishment and development of the new Society office at Bronaeron.  He also represents the Society on the National Stallion Forum and is leading negotiations with Defra over revised passporting proposals etc.

Sales

The Tireve and Dyrfal Studs have consigned some of their very best stock to the official WPCS autumn cob sales, originally held at the Llanarth stud and latterly at the Royal Welsh Showground.  Some highlights of youngstock sales include:
Dyrfal Red Rose, Section C filly foal, winner at the Royal Welsh, National Pony Show and Ceredigion Foal Shows, who sold for £4,800 the then world record price for a Section C of any age.
Tireve Empress, a chestnut filly by Nebo Daniel, sold for export to Denmark in 1990 for 3,000 guineas.
Tireve Dream Lady, a bay filly, champion at Ceredigion Foal Show, also sold for 3,000 guineas.
Tireve Red Flyer, a 2 year old colt by Cippyn Red Flyer, sold to the Horeb Stud in 1995 for 1,850 where he was a successful stallion for a number of years.

The stud also have a policy of passing on successful broodmares between 10 and 12 years old, once fillies from them have been retained.  This policy has ensured that there is a wide gene pool at the stud, rather than relying on the same mares to produce for many years which can lead to in-breeding.  It also ensures that there is room to keep the best youngstock and thus preserve the bloodlines developed over the past 40 years.  Brood mares consigned to the sales have gone on to be very successful with their new owners and have in many instances become the foundation of new studs.

Any broodmare consigned to the sales has been a regular and trouble free breeder and is certified in foal, thus giving confidence to prospective purchasers.

Tireve Navestock Princess, by Nebo Prince sold in 1993 for 4,800 guineas to Anne Wheatcroft of the Sydenham Stud.
Tireve Cardi Princess by Redwood Cardi Comet, was sold at 14 years old for £2,850
Tireve Nymph by Nebo Prince was purchased by the Stepol Stud in 1998 for £2,750
Tireve Princess Royal by Nebo Prince, out of Cledlyn Princess, was sold to Mr & Mrs Andy Bircher for £3,250, where she is still breeding at 25 years old
Tireve Temptress by Glanvyrnwy Temptation, sold for £3,250
Tireve Serena by Oxspring Prince and out of Tireve Princess Royal, sold in 2008 to the Wishaw Stud of the Cotterill Family for £6,200

Tireve Serena is the dam of the studs junior stallion: Tireve The Redeemer, as well as the retained mares Tireve New Dawn, by Tireve Tywysog Du and Tireve Daisy May, by Donys President
